Credentials and Qualifications

Shauna Tiffany

Founder & Play Therapist

I am a qualified Play therapist with a passion for supporting children and young people to become the best version of themselves.

I am based in Leeds, West Yorkshire and I travel to schools in and around the area.

I am a licensed and insured member of PTUK and hold a valid and up-to-date DBS (police check).

My journey to becoming a Play Therapist began in February 2018 it took four years to complete what should have been an 18-month course. COVID-19 and both of my children were born during this period.

In April 2022, I finally finished the first part of my course and qualified as a Therapeutic Play Skills Specialist (Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills). As I was nearing the end of my course, I began working for a charity in Bradford named Step2 (Their contact details are in the resources folder). They offered to support me in funding the final stages of my course and at the end of April (on my son's first birthday) I began the final stages of becoming a qualified play therapist. Little did I know at the start of this course, how much my life would change both personally and professionally as I embarked on the experiential exercises.

In the Spring of 2023, I completed my 100 clinical hours and my 30-hour case study. This comes with a huge thank you to my placement school for their continued support. Their unwavering encouragement has meant that I completed this nearly seven months ahead of my hand-in date. This professional relationship will continue in the future making positive and life-changing decisions for the direct impact of the children in the community.

The use of Supervision

Ensuring I work safely and ethically within my practise I abide by PTUK's ethical code of conduct and attend regular supervision sessions. There are two purposes to supervision;

One for the uses if for education, to reflect and develop working skills relating practise to theory, to enable me to apply my approach appropriately to children and young at different developmental stages. As well as developing therapeutic approaches and intervention plans for the best outcomes for children.

The second use of supervision is to validate my experiences both as a person and a therapist. To plan and utilise the personal and professional resources.  To give constructive positive and critical feedback. To offer a space to reflect and clarify what is evoked by the work and explore our reactions to this experience. Ensure that the work is done in such a way that the supervisor can be accountable for the monitoring and quality of the work being done with the children. It is important to form a clear contract for every supervisory relationship, stating length of contract, responsibilities and fees.

The minimum requirement for supervision is an hour and a half per month. My preference is to meet with my supervisor bi weekly.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

WHAT IS CPD?

This is essential for good quality practice by certified and accredited PTUK/PTI Practitioner Members, to maintain an entry on the Voluntary Register.

The requirement is to undertake at least 30 hours of allowable activities each year to retain membership. Planning for CPD and play therapy training should be based upon PTUK/PTI’s competency framework and an individual assessment of needs based on a clinical audit. In some countries these standards are known as Continuous Education (CE).

The activities must be selected from 3 or more categories, at least one of which must be from categories 1-3. The maximum hours allowed per year is the number that may be counted towards the 30 – you may of course undertake more if this category is useful for you, but the excess may not be counted for CPD.

Book an initial assessment to get to know one another and whether we can support you and your family.

There’s no commitment, pressure, or obligation.
