Who is play therapy for?

For children aged three to 13 years of age, Play therapy uses play as a way of helping people understand and express their thoughts and feelings. It is mainly used with children who may not be able to put how they are feeling into words.

WHEN TO MAKE A REFERRAL

There are many reasons why you will refer a child or young person for play therapy. The list below is an example and should not be seen as exhaustive. 

  • Abuse (emotional, physical, sexual)

  • ADHD/ ADD

  • Aggression/Anger

  • Attachment Difficulties

  • Antisocial Behaviour

  • Anxiety  

  • Bed Wetting/ night terrors

  • Behaviour changes

  • Bereavement 

  • Binge eating

  • Bullying or being bullied

  • Domestic Violence (any family member)

  • Difficulty with making and/or maintaining friends

  • Divorce/Separation

  • Family Breakdown

  • Guilt

  • Illness (Short or long term).

  • Learning Disability

  • Low self-confidence

  • Low self-esteem

  • Lying

  • Regression

  • Shy

  • Selective Mutism

  • Temper/meltdowns

  • Withdrawal from activities
